2 WELCOME TO PERILLO TOURS! The story of Perillo Tours begins with Joseph Perillo, an Italian attorney from Naples who immigrated to the United States in 1925. Joseph founded Perillo Tours in 1945 in a modest Bronx storefront in a section still called “Little Italy.” He started his company to satisfy the growing needs of the large Italian immigrant population who settled in America after World War II. It was an ethnic Italian travel agency as well as a community center of business and social services. Joseph provided immigration services, translations, foreign exchange, and food parcels to post for Italy. Their main-stay service was steamship, and later, airline tickets for those who hungered to go back to their motherland. About 6 months after Joe opened up shop, Mario Perillo, joined his father in business. During the next 15 years, Mario worked with the company, graduated from NY Law School and practiced law at the same Bronx location. Mario’s first taste of the travel business was the Catholic “Holy Year” of 1950 when he convinced 200 people to sail for Naples in what would become his first Italy tour. The tour was all inclusive, thus eliminating surprise expenses far away from home. The concepts of ‘escorted’ and ‘all inclusive,’ were to become the hallmarks of Perillo’s travel offerings to this day. Perillo Tours grew to become the largest Italian ethnic agency in New York City. The local Italian radio stations rang out with the Perillo slogan— Chi viaggia con Perillo, viaggia tranquillo. (When you travel with Perillo, you travel in tranquility.) Mario Perillo came to be known as “Mr. Italy.” Today, Mario’s son, Steve Perillo drives the 3rd generation, maintaining Perillo Tours’ preeminent position in the travel industry.
